Volcanoes get back at Malaysians in Asian 7s

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Volcanoes regrouped from their SEA Games defeat and beat Malaysia and Chinese Taipei in the first leg of the 2017 Asian 7s Series in Hong Kong recently.

The Globe Phl Volcanoes rattled off 33 unanswered points to crush the SEA Games gold medalists Malaysians with Tommy Kalaw Gilbert, Joe Palabay Dawson and Vincent Amar Young leading the attack.

The victory came two weeks after the then undermanned Volcanoes failed on their medal bid in Kuala Lumpur SEAG.

“It has always been a great rivalry between the two nations, and we have the opportunity to go head-to-head throughout the Asia 7s Series in the next two legs that will be played in Korea on Sept 23-24 and in Sri Lanka on Oct 14-15,” said Jake Letts of the Philippine Rugby Union.

“Malaysia are a class outfit, it goes to show the level and intensity of sport in the region,” he added.
