UP, UST to appeal players' eligibility

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATED) The University of the Philippines (UP) and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) will make their case to the UAAP Board of Trustees after some of their key players were ruled ineligible for the upcoming Season 80 men's basketball tournament.

UP's Ibrahim Quattara and Rob Ricaforte, as well as UST's Steve Akomo, were both found ineligible by the league's eligibility committee as they have failed to meet residency requirements.

Quattara and Akomo, in particular, have only served one year of residency instead of the required two years.

Ricaforte, meanwhile, was ruled ineligible because of his age

Both UP and UST are prepared to make their case to the Board of Trustees that a one-year residency is sufficient for their foreign student-athletes, per the bill championed by former senator Pia Cayetano that was signed into law in 2015. That law regulates the residency requirements of the country's various collegiate leagues.
