Radwanska sees off Putintseva challenge to reach round 3

NEW YORK, NY, USA - No.10 seed Agnieszka Radwanska survived a tough first set against Yulia Putintseva before wrapping up the match 7-5, 6-2 to move into the third round of the US Open for the seventh time on her career.

Radwanska narrowly came through a tense opening set that featured five breaks of serve. The Pole has been injecting a bit more aggression into her game during the North American hard court summer, and it reaped rewards in her match against Putintseva on Thursday night.

No.10 seed Agnieszka Radwanska survived a tough first set against Yulia Putintseva before wrapping up the match in straights sets to move into the third round of the US Open.
The No.10 seed hit 28 winners to 16 unforced errors, as well as fired three aces against Putintseva in their one hour and 44 minute clash. Agnieszka did plenty of damage at the net too, winning 26 points in her 40 forays to the net. For her part, Putintseva struck 27 winners but also 27 unforced errors - most of the latter coming in the one-sided second set.

After trading breaks twice in the first set, Putintseva was one point away from forcing the tiebreak before Radwanska finally closed it out with a late break. But in the second set, Radwanska pulled away as the Kazakh struggled with injury and looked increasingly frustrated.

The victory puts Radwanska one win away from her career-best result in Flushing Meadows; she’s reached the round of 16 five times previously, but never been past the fourth round.

Standing in the way of a sixth round of 16 berth will be the winner of the second round clash between No.20 seed CoCo Vandeweghe and Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur.
