Pumaren rues veterans' poor play in loss to Ateneo

MANILA, Philippines – Adamson University head coach Franz Pumaren refused to use the absence of Cameroonian center Papi Sarr as the reason for their huge opening day loss to Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday.

Sarr's absence left a gaping hole in the paint, one that was exploited by Ateneo repeatedly. The Blue Eagles claimed an 85-65 victory, with Chibueze Ikeh tallying an 18-point, 17-rebound double-double as the Falcons were out-rebounded 35-60.

"I'm one coach who won't dwell on that," Pumaren said of Sarr's absence due to a groin injury.

"I've been coaching for the longest time, but you won't hear from me na I'll be saying, 'Sayang, if this player lang is here.' No. That's part of my job – make the most out of your remaining 15 players," he explained.

More than Sarr's absence, Pumaren believes the key reason for their loss is that most of their veterans underperformed against the Blue Eagles.
