Pirates eye perfect 10 vs Cards

MANILA, Philippines — Lyceum of the Philippines University hopes to open its second round elims campaign the way it did in the first as it clashes with lowly Mapua today, looking to extend its win run to 10 at resumption of action in the 93rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

The Pirates swept the first round in impressive fashion, including a victory over the defending champion San Beda Red Lions, making them the heavy favorites to repeat over the Cardinals at 4 p.m.

“We were blessed with players whose collective effort is for the good of the team instead of their own individual selves,” said LPU coach Topex Robinson.

Cameroonian Mike Harry Nzeusseu, CJ Perez, skipper MJ Ayaay and twins Jaycee and Jayvee Marcelino have been dishing out big games for the Pirates who have practically assured themselves of a first Final Four stint in six years with their strong start.

Nzeusseu and Perez, in fact, are in the thick of things in the MVP race paced by Nigerian Prince Eze of Perpetual Help, Ayaay has kept the team intact with his precision playmaking while the Marcelino twins have anchored the Pirates’ solid defense.
