Nonito Donaire: I still have what it takes to be world champ

Nonito Donaire maintains he can regain his championship form, as the 34-year-old former fighter of the year prepares for a crucial bout against Ruben Garcia Hernandez of Mexico in San Antonio, Texas on September 23.

"I'm ready to return to the ring and show that I still have what it takes to be a world champion and face the best in this sport," Donaire said in a report by Dan Rafael on ESPN.

Donaire, who lost his world junior-featherweight title to Jessie Magdaleno of the US via decision last November, parted amicably with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. after failing to get the rematch he wanted against Magdaleno.

Donaire is now associated with Eric Schaefer’s Ringstar Sports, which is eyeing a world-title shot for Donaire early next year.

"The Filipino Flash" will take on Hernandez, who turns 25 in November, in a featherweight clash at The Alamodome, the site where he beat Wilfredo Vazquez for the vacant junior featherweight world title in 2012.
