NLEX fends off undermanned GlobalPort

MANILA, Philippines – The NLEX Road Warriors are inching closer towards claiming a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals after holding off the GlobalPort Batang Pier, 109-99, in the 2017 PBA Governors' Cup on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Juami Tiongson came up with big plays in the fourth quarter to spearhead NLEX's breakaway, after GlobalPort clawed their way back from an early 18-point hole to make it a nip-and-tuck game from the second quarter onwards.

With the victory, NLEX improved to 7-2 in the conference ahead of a 10-day break. Coach Yeng Guiao anticipates that the Road Warriors would need one more victory in order to secure a twice-to-beat bonus in the quarterfinals.

"We need eight (wins) to make the top 4. We have two more games, hard games against Talk 'N Text and Star. We have a 10-day break, and 7-2 is a good place to be," said Guiao after their win. "So we will just be refreshing, recharging ourselves, and manonood muna kami na makipagbakbakan ang iba."

The Batang Pier were playing without Stanley Pringle, who is dealing with a family issue and had to go back to the United States. Without their dynamic guard, GlobalPort fell behind early, trailing by as much as 18 points, 9-27, halfway through the opening frame.
