Mbala to miss La Salle's opening game due to AfroBasket

MANILA, Philippines – Reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player Ben Mbala will miss De La Salle University's first game of Season 80 after he was called up to play for Cameroon's national basketball team in the 2017 AfroBasket.

La Salle athletic director Emmanuel Calanog confirmed to ABS-CBN News on Monday that Mbala will indeed be unavailable when the Green Archers open their UAAP title defense against Far Eastern University (FEU) on Sunday afternoon at the Mall of Asia Arena.

"He was requested by his national team to play for them," Calanog said. "'Yung tournament nila starts this week."

Cameroon, ranked 52nd in the world, was drawn into Group C along with hosts Tunisia, Guinea, and Rwanda. They open their campaign on September 8 against the host nation, then play Guinea on September 9 – one day before La Salle takes on the FEU Tamaraws.

Mbala left for Cameroon two weeks ago, according to Calanog.
