Lyceum fends off Mapua, improves to 10-0

MANILA, Philippines – The Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates extended their perfect start to 10 games after holding off a gritty Mapua University, 96-90, on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Powered by CJ Perez and Jaycee Marcelino, the Pirates kept their hold of the top spot in the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament while sending the Cardinals to their ninth loss against just one win. It was also Mapua's eighth consecutive loss of the tournament.

The 10-0 start ensures that the Pirates will continue making history. This is already the most wins that Lyceum has had since joining the NCAA six seasons ago.

Perez, one of the leading MVP candidates after the first round, scored 22 points on a highly efficient 8-of-11 shooting clip, while also adding nine rebounds. Marcelino, meanwhile, had 19 points, six boards, and two assists.

However, it was far from the dominant win that was expected from the Pirates, especially as they were going up against the bottom-ranked team in the league.
