La Salle still looms, but UAAP coaches predict competitive Season 80

MANILA, Philippines – Defending men's basketball champions De La Salle Green Archers remain the favorites in the upcoming UAAP Season 80 men's basketball tournament, but the league's coaches foresee a more wide-open tournament this year.

Unlike in Season 79, when La Salle's vaunted line-up tore through the competition and lost just once in 17 games, UAAP coaches believe that there are more teams this year which can conceivably win the championship.

"The defending champions are still the team to beat," declared Ateneo de Manila University assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga, who attended Monday's press conference at the Mall of Asia Arena in place of head coach Tab Baldwin.

But Arespacochaga noted that two teams who were considered dark horses in Season 79 – namely Adamson University and University of the Philippines – have now become full-fledged contenders.

"NU (National University), I think, is now the dark horse of the league," added Arespacochaga.
