La Salle captain Montalbo had no intention of missing FEU game

MANILA, Philippines – For De La Salle University team captain Kib Montalbo, there was no way he was missing the Green Archers' first game of the UAAP Season 80 men's basketball tournament – even though he had just been hospitalized due to an illness.

Even while coming off a viral illness, Montalbo played a vital role in La Salle's 95-90 win over Far Eastern University (FEU) on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena. He scored 12 points – all on three-pointers – while also coming up with a huge steal with 30 seconds left to ice the game.

"I practiced only for three days," said Montalbo. "Ang layo pa. Wala pa ako sa kundisyon. Kasi kanina, puro ako oxygen. Mabilis akong mapagod. Bumigay nga sa fourth quarter 'yung legs ko, kasi pagod na, pero I'm good."

Montalbo is still unsure of his exact illness – "some sort of allergy," he said – and the veteran guard needs to return to his doctor to get checked up anew.

Yet once he was given clearance to play in their season opener, Montalbo immediately started working his way back to fitness.
