FEU bounces back, throttles UE for first win

MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University (FEU) recovered from its loss in the opening weekend by downing University of the East (UE), 90-83, for their first victory of the UAAP Season 80 men's basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Prince Orizu dominated the Red Warriors' smaller frontline en route to a 15-point, 16-rebound performance, while Ron Dennison had another strong game with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Though they settled for a seven-point win, the Tamaraws were in control throughout the game, leading nearly wire-to-wire despite struggling at times against the Red Warriors' full-court press. FEU led by as much as 19 points, 30-11, at the 9:36 mark of the second quarter, thanks to Barkley Eboña's lay-up.

"It always gives you satisfaction when you win. It's our first of the season and my first one as the coach," said FEU coach Olsen Racela after their victory. "Pero malayo pa kami sa kung saan namin gusto pumunta."

The Red Warriors managed to stay within striking distance, however, thanks to the aggressiveness of Alvin Pasaol and Clark Derige. It was a triple by Derige that made it an eight-point game, 28-36, with 3:55 left in the second quarter.
