Del Potro Cruises At US Open; Dolgopolov Beats Berdych

Juan Martin del Potro continued to build his confidence on Wednesday at the US Open, where he hit the heights eight years ago with his lone Grand Slam title (d. Federer).

The popular Argentine struck 40 winners, including 17 aces, to knock out Spanish qualifier Adrian Menendez-Maceiras 6-2, 6-3, 7-6(3) in two hours and 10 minutes. The No. 24 seed, now 20-11 on the 2017 season, will next face another Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, the No. 11 seed.

Juan Martin del Potro advances to the third round at the US Open.
Bautista Agut, the winner of his sixth ATP World Tour title at last week's Winston-Salem Open, beat Germany's Dustin Brown 6-1, 6-3, 7-6(3) in one hour and 48 minutes. Currently at a career-high No. 13 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, the Spaniard will be hoping to improve on fourth-round runs in 2014 and 2015.

Del Potro experienced few problems against 31-year-old Menedez-Maceiras, who qualified for the first time on his 10th attempt at the US Open. He won six straight games from 2-2 in the first set and recovered from an 0/3 deficit in the third-set tie-break.

Alexandr Dolgopolov recorded his second win in his sixth meeting against Czech Tomas Berdych, the 2012 semi-finalist and No. 15 seed. Dolgopolov triumphed 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(5), 6-2 over two hours and 37 minutes to advance to the US Open third round for the first time since 2012.

The Ukrainian will next face Serbia’s Viktor Troicki, who converted six of eight break point opportunities to defeat Italian Stefano Travaglia 7-6(6), 7-5, 6-0. He is through to the third round at Flushing Meadows for the third time (also 2008, 2015).
