Ateneo looks to improve further amid winning run

MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles have been simply superb in their first three games of the UAAP Season 80 men's basketball tournament, winning games by an average margin of 17.67 points, thanks to a crisp offense and on-point defense.

After a pair of 20-point blowouts against Adamson University and University of the Philippines (UP), the Blue Eagles were tested by a tough Far Eastern University (FEU) squad on Sunday, and they responded accordingly. Behind another all-around effort from Thirdy Ravena and a hot shooting game from Anton Asistio, the Blue Eagles came away with a 94-82 victory to hike their record to 3-0.

But Ateneo's coaching staff is repeatedly warning the Blue Eagles that they cannot put too much stock on their pristine record.

"It's still a long way to go," said assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga after Sunday's win. "Our philosophy has been to look at games one at a time, and we're still going to do that, so our minds are focused."

So far, the philosophy has worked wonders for Ateneo. Through three games, they are averaging 90.3 points per game, the third-highest mark in the UAAP despite playing at the slowest pace in the league. They are also getting it done on defense, limiting opponents to a league-best 72.7 points per game.
