Antonio, Fronda favored

GM Rogelio Antonio opens defense of his crown even as WGM Janelle Mae Frayna vacates her throne when the Battle of Grandmasters reels off today (Sept. 6) at the City Club of Alphaland Makati Place.

GMs John Paul Gomez (Fide rating- 2463), Rogelio Barcenilla, Jr. (2457), and Darwin Laylo (2433) are seen to crowd out Antonio (2438) for the title.
Expected to spring surprises in the apex of the three-step National Chess Championships are IMs Haridas Pascua (2427), Paulo Bersamina (2397), Chito Garma (2325), Ronald Bancod (2276), and National Master John Marvin Miciano, reigning national junior champion.
The distaff side of the tilt sponsored by Philippine Sports Commission and Alphaland Corporation, is a wide open race among WIMs  Jan Jodilyn Fronda (2170), Marie Antoinette San Diego (2130), Catherine Secopito (2120), Bernadette Galas (2111), Mikee Charlene Suede (2096) and Beverly Mendoza (1991).
WFMS Shania Mae Mendoza (2066) and Christy Lamiel Bernales (2059) loom as dark horses.
