Well done, Janelle

WELL done.

WGM Janelle Mae Frayna swept her last two games with surprising ease to finish in a tie for 11th place in the Women’s Open zum  Erfurter Frauenschach  festival 2017 in Erfurt, Germany.

Janelle Mae Frayna.
Frayna, ever so eager to make her mark in the world chess stage, outduelled  Thanh Ha Nguyen of  Germany in the eighth round and  Kinzel of Germany in the ninth and final round to barge into the Top 15 in the prestigious 58-player, 14-nation competition.

The 21-year-old pride of Far Eastern University, who made history by becoming the country’s first WGM last year, redeemed  herself from a  pair of heartbreaking losses to subdue Thanh in a very instructive endgame of a Modern Tiger defense.

The  No. 15 seed Frayna (ELO 2235) followed  it up with a clear victory with a 51-move  mate over Kinzel in  their Dutch Defense encounter.

Overall, the Legazpi City, Bicol-born  Frayna finished in a tie for 11th to 15th  places with 5.5 points on four wins, three draws and two losses.

Frayna finished two points behind eventual  champion WGM Mihaela  Sandu of Romania, who closed out with 7.5 points and one a half points behind CM Bahkti Kulkami of India and  WIM Judith Fuchs  of Germany, who wound up with seven points.
