'Rusty' Standhardinger still stands tall for Gilas

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Still feeling the effects of a long journey, and having only practiced once with his teammates, Fil-German Christian Standhardinger still played a huge role in Gilas Pilipinas' victory against Thailand in their first game of the Southeast Asian Games.

Standhardinger, who flew from the FIBA Asia Cup in Beirut to join the team in Kuala Lumpur, tallied a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in Gilas' 81-74 win over a tough Thailand team at the MABA Stadium last Sunday night.

His lay-up with 47 seconds left, off a pick-and-roll play with Baser Amer, essentially wrapped up the win for the Philippines.

"It was fun playing with those guys," said Standhardinger, who also shone for Gilas in their tournament in Lebanon before answering the country's call to play in the Southeast Asian Games.

"We have some adjustments to do," he added. "They (Thailand) came out playing very hard. I think we learned a lot from this game, and I think we got to be a lot better next game."
