Pliskova wins Wozniacki battle, Muguruza next in Cincy

CINCINNATI, OH, USA - Top seed Karolina Pliskova put together a dominant performance against Caroline Wozniacki to charge into the Western & Southern Open semifinals in straight sets.

The World No.1 stayed rock-solid on serve, not letting Wozniacki break once, to seal the 6-2, 6-4 victory in just 66 minutes.

Top seed Karolina Pliskova put together a dominant performance against Caroline Wozniacki to charge into the Western & Southern Open semifinals in straight sets.
Wozniacki is already becoming a familiar nemesis for Pliskova; their Cincinnati quarterfinal marks the fifth meeting of 2017 for the pair, with both players locked at two wins each. Their last clash come a week ago in Toronto where Wozniacki outlasted Pliskova in three sets.

Taking from what she learned in her Toronto defeat, Pliskova came out firing on her serve against Wozniacki. She punctuated her powerful deliveries with heavy, high balls that kicked up to Wozniacki’s shoulder height and made returning a challenge.

The tactic paid off; after facing a break point early on her very first service game at 1-1, Pliskova went on to lose just one point on serve in the rest of the set - a single double fault. She reeled off five of the next six games to ease through the first set against the Dane.

Wozniacki found her range in the second set to hang in the rallies and put more pressure on Pliskova, but a double fault gave her opponent an early break.

Despite her monumental defensive efforts, Wozniacki was never able to recover the break as Pliskova powered through to her second victory over Wozniacki in as many weeks - and third in 2017.

Her reward will be a semifinal clash with reigning Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza, who outlasted Svetlana Kuznetsova in a marathon three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, earlier in the day.
