Pliskova: 'It's going to be tough staying ahead of Simona'

TORONTO, Canada - Karolina Pliskova is relishing the battle to hold onto her WTA World No.1 ranking, with Simona Halep pushing the Czech hard for the top spot. Pliskova succeeded Angelique Kerber at the summit during Wimbledon last month, but Halep remains in contention to take over within the next few weeks.

Karolina Pliskova knows Simona Halep will pose a big
challenge in her bid to retain the WTA World No.1 ranking.
"It's going to be tough," the 25-year-old told wtatennis.com. "There are a few tournaments to go before the end of the year and I know Simona's behind me. I'll do my best to stay there as long as I can - hopefully a few more weeks."

Pliskova was out of Wimbledon when she actually became No.1 last month, with her ascension confirmed a week after her exit by Halep's loss in the quarterfinals.

"It was a little bit strange. I was on my holidays, a bit disappointed I lost, then I found out Simona lost. Unfortunate for her but good for me. It was a little bit strange feeling that I was not on the court and not celebrating with a win. It would definitely have been better, but still exciting to get there."

Pliskova beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in her opening Rogers Cup win in Toronto this week and plays Naomi Osaka for a place in the last eight on Thursday.
