PH falls to Vietnam in men's volleyball

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – The Philippine men's volleyball team put up a gallant stand, but still fell short against a tough Vietnam team in their first game of the men's volleyball tournament in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.

Against a taller, more experienced squad, the Philippines repeatedly tried to keep close but got rebuffed every time, as the Vietnamese seized the 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 victory in an hour and 27 minutes at the MiTEC Hall 11 here.

"Wala akong masabi kasi ginusto naman ng mga players. I know they did their best," head coach Sammy Acaylar said after the loss, which came in front a huge, boisterous Filipino contingent at the venue. "Ginawa talaga nila ang best nila, gusto nilang manalo."

The Philippines fell behind two sets to none as they had no answer for the tandem of Nguyen Hoang Thuong and Hoang Van Phuong, who repeatedly pounced on the Filipinos' slow reaction at the net.

Indeed, it was a quick kill from Nguyen Hoang that ended the second set, after the Filipinos saved one set point.
