Perpetual Help holds off San Sebastian

MANILA, Philippines – University of Perpetual Help won its second game in a row in cardiac fashion, escaping with a 68-65 victory over San Sebastian College in the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball tournament on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Skipper GJ Ylagan was impressive in the end game, knocking down clutch free throws then blocking Allyn Bulanadi's three-pointer that could have tied the game.

"Siyempre, masarap sa pakiramdam kasi ang hirap manalo eh," said Ylagan, who top-scored for Perpetual Help with 15 points, which included a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the stripe. "Pinaghirapan namin ito."

As has been the hallmark of a Perpetual Help game, it was a slow-paced, grind-it-out contest. The Altas, wearing their white jerseys for the first time this season, took a 30-22 lead at the half after holding San Sebastian to only eight points in the second period, and extended their lead to 10 points, 32-22, early in the third quarter.

But the Stags crawled their way back, thanks to a flurry of baskets from Ryan Costelo and a three-point play from Bulanadi, who made it a two-point game, 34-32, with still 6:22 left. A three-pointer from RK Ilagan tied the contest at 36 with just under four minutes to go in the third quarter.

Ylagan, however, responded with back-to-back triples to push Perpetual back ahead. The Altas would never relinquish the lead, though the Stags came uncomfortably close in the final frame.
