Meralco zooms to solo lead, keeps KIA winless

MANILA, Philippines – Meralco soared to the top of the league standings on Sunday, after registering a comfortable 112-97 victory over the KIA Picanto in their 2017 PBA Governors' Cup showdown at the Araneta Coliseum.

Import Allen Durham was superb for the Bolts, tallying a triple-double of 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists while also adding two blocks. Three other players scored in double-digits as Meralco improved to 4-0 in the season-ending conference.

"It was a very good effort from my team today, both offensively and defensively," Meralco coach Norman Black said after the game. "We wanted to be very focused going into this game, because we didn't want to stumble."

"Our goal is to stay in the Top 4 and get a twice-to-beat advantage," he added.

It was a slow start for the Bolts, which trailed, 9-4, at the 9:28 mark of the first frame after a lay-up by KIA import Markeith Cummings. But with Durham leading the way, Meralco soon broke the game open, and took a 26-15 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

The Bolts continued to pile on the points in the second period, and eventually led by as much as 24 points, 76-52, in the third quarter.
