Hours after emotional win, Perlas in do-or-die tiff anew

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Philippine women's basketball team barely has time to bask in its remarkable come-from-behind victory over Thailand before it returns to action in the Southeast Asian Games.

Perlas Pilipinas will face off against host team Malaysia at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, not even 24 hours after the Filipinos recovered from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun Thailand, 69-67, at the MABA Stadium.

Their amazing win over Thailand, which saw Perlas end the game on a 16-2 run, improved the Philippines' record to 3-1. The team still needs to defeat Malaysia (3-0) in order to stay in the gold medal hunt.

"I hope this game would carry us going into Malaysia (Thursday)," Perlas coach Patrick Aquino told ABS-CBN News after their victory.

The unbeaten Malaysians had a day off on Wednesday, and thus will be well-rested when they take on Perlas tomorrow. They have been winning games by an average margin of 22.7 points, and defeated Indonesia — a team that beat the Philippines — 72-57 on Tuesday night.
