Horn to demand random drug testing for Pacquiao rematch: report

MANILA, Philippines – Australian boxer Jeff Horn will ask for random pre-fight drug testing for his rematch against Filipino legend Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, his trainer was quoted as saying.

The unheralded Horn shocked Pacquiao when they fought last July at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, winning a unanimous decision to claim the Filipino's WBO welterweight belt. It was a victory that was criticized by boxing analysts, who felt that the "Pacman" did enough to win despite no longer being at his athletic peak.

According to Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, the Filipino star is exercising his rematch clause, and while negotiations are still on-going, Horn's camp has already made it clear that they want stricter drug testing procedures this time around.

"It is something that I'd bring up, because what I don't want is for them to go 'The only way I can win this fight is if we are trying to get an unfair advantage'," Glenn Rushton, Horn's trainer, said, as quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald.

"I would certainly be very mindful of that. We want the big fights, but we want a level playing field," Rushton added.

In the same report, Rushton admitted that he was not satisfied with the drug testing protocol during the first fight, as it only involved a post-bout urine test. Thus, a more stringent procedure is welcomed by the trainer, who has already signed up his fighter for "the WBC-VADA clean boxing program."
