Goerges claims all-German marathon against Petkovic

WASHINGTON DC, USA - No.4 seed Julia Goerges outlasted Andrea Petkovic to claim victory in their marathon all-German clash and book a spot in her third WTA final of 2017 at the Citi Open.

Up against 2013 finalist Petkovic - a former Top 10 player who currently sits at No.102 with her career thwarted by injury - Goerges showed every ounce of her grit and aggressive play to come back from a set down and complete the 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 victory after a two hour and 30 minute battle.

No.4 seed Julia Goerges outlasted Andrea Petkovic to claim victory in their marathon all-German clash and book a spot in her third WTA final of 2017 at the Citi Open.
Petkovic made an aggressive start to the encounter, grabbing an early break and settling into rallies. But, in a move that would set the tone for the rest of the match, Goerges rallied back from 2-5 down and survived a marathon game to break as her opponent tried to serve it out.

But Petkovic got back on track a few games later, edging through after a Goerges double fault avoided sending them into a tiebreak. Goerges kept Pektovic under pressure in the second, claiming the lone break at 3-2 and holding onto the lead despite Petkovic’s increased aggression.

The deciding set was tug-of-war between the Fed Cup teammates; Petkovic would break first and each time Goerges would claw her way back. The pair traded breaks twice before Goerges finally notched her first lead, wrestling away the deciding break late in the set.

Goerges will take on No.7 seed Ekaterina Makarova as she seeks her first WTA title of the year, having reached finals earlier in the season in Mallorca and Bucharest. Makarova came back from a set down to defeat No.5 seed Océane Dodin 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 earlier in the day.
