Gilas’ Standhardinger on China: ‘I hope they won’t like playing against me’

Christian Standhardinger isn’t the type to back down from anyone, not even against a fearsome China side.

Standhardinger, Gilas Pilipinas’ rugged big man, is poised to play an even bigger role with injured June Mar Fajardo expected to miss the 2017 Fiba Asia Cup and the Fil-German has already embraced the challenge.

“Actually, I like to play against taller players. I might have the disadvantage in height because usually I don’t play five but in the Philippines I am the five to help the team,” he said Saturday when asked about Gilas’ first assignment China.

“I’ll take on the challenge. I hope that they will not like playing against me.”

The 28-year-old Standhardinger, who will be the country’s naturalized player with Andray Blatche skipping the tournament in Beirut, Lebanon due to security reasons, was a revelation for Gilas in the Jones Cup where he made a name for himself as a bruiser and versatile center.
