Gilas Pilipinas begins quest for 17th SEA Games basketball gold

KUALA LUMPUR — The Philippines begins its quest for a 17th gold medal in basketball when it battles Thailand in the 29th Southeast Asian Games at the MABA Stadium here on Sunday night.

As proven by its dominant performance in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Championship in Manila last May, Gilas Pilipinas remains the overwhelming favorite to retain the gold, despite the continued improvement of its regional rivals.

One such rival is Thailand, who will challenge the men's basketball team at 9:30 p.m., following the 7:15 p.m. showdown between the Philippines and Singapore in the women's division.

Thailand has shown tremendous improvement, winning the bronze in the SEABA tournament. The Thais also memorably pushed a young Philippine team to the limit back in the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore, though the latter eked out an 80-75 win.

The Filipinos wound up escaping Indonesia, 72-64, in the gold medal match.
