Gilas escapes with difficult win over Thailand

KUALA LUMPUR -- (UPDATED) The Gilas Pilipinas men's basketball team had to dig deep in order to open their campaign in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games with a victory.

Pushed all game long by a bigger Thailand squad, Gilas Pilipinas stood firm in the end game behind the steadying presence of Kiefer Ravena and Baser Amer to hack out a difficult 81-74 win on Sunday evening at the jampacked MABA Stadium here.

Clutch buckets by Ravena and Amer, as well as a superb defensive job by Ray Parks on Thai-American Tyler Lamb, eventually allowed the young Filipinos to pull away in the final four minutes of the contest, after Thailand threatened to pull off a massive upset.

"All along, they were really our top team to beat," Gilas coach Jong Uichico said after the game. "We just made crucial stops in the end, and we made crucial baskets in the end."

The Philippines appeared headed for a comfortable win after posting a 29-16 advantage with seven minutes left in the second quarter, thanks to buckets from Raymar Jose off a perfect pick-and-roll play with Mike Tolomia, and a booming triple by Parks, this time thanks to a kick out pass from Tolomia.
