Frayna scores successive wins for share of 2nd place in Belgium tilt

The Philippines’ Janelle Mae Frayna pocketed a pair of impressive victories against Dutch Jochem Mullink and Englishman Mark Gray to claim a share of second place after 6 rounds of the Brugse Meesters 2017 in Brugge, Belgium Tuesday night.

The wins catapulted Frayna, 21, into a 10-player cluster at No. 2 with 5 points each, which includes 42-year-old Hungarian Grandmaster Attila Czebe.

Czebe beat Frayna in the 21st Hogeschool Zeeland Open 2017 in Vlissingen, The Netherlands last week in a game where the Filipina blundered away her winning chances.

Frayna, the country’s first ever Woman Grandmaster, will now have a chance to avenge her defeat as she clashes with Czebe in the 7th round.

Dutch International Master Lucas Van Foreest led the way with 5.5 points after beating Hungarian GM Zoltan Varga, while Frayna’s coach, GM Jayson Gonzales, is half a point behind with 4.5 points after he drew with Italian Carlo Marzano.
