Carl Bryan Cruz, Baser Amer profess innocence after shock ejection

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Gilas Pilipinas players Carl Bryan Cruz and Baser Amer were both surprised to have been thrown out of their game against Malaysia on Wednesday night, with the teammates maintaining their innocence following the contest.

Cruz and Amer were ejected after trying to separate Gilas teammate Kevin Ferrer from Malaysia's Kuek Tian Yuan, as they got tangled up after a rebounding sequence midway through the third quarter.

Once all players moved to their respective benches, the Philippine team got a surprise when the referees decided to eject Amer and Cruz, with assistant coach Jimmy Alapag left trying to get an explanation from the officials.

The duo's expulsion only fueled their teammates, and the Philippines still cruised to a 98-66 win for a three-game sweep of Group A. Still, afterward both Amer and Cruz were left searching for an explanation from their head-scratching ejection.

"Wala akong kinalaman. Malinis ang konsensya ko," Cruz said. "Wala akong ginagawang kasalanan."
