Balse-Pabayo's veteran smarts serve Creamline well

MANILA, Philippines – For Creamline assistant coach Oliver Almadro, what Ging Balse-Pabayo provides for the Cool Smashers does not always show up in the statistics.

But the former University of Santo Tomas (UST) stalwart never fails to make her presence felt whenever she is sent in by coach Tai Bundit. Balse-Pabayo no longer produces the numbers that she did when she was the undisputed Queen Tigress, but she still contributes to Creamline's victory in subtle ways.

This was most evident on Wednesday, during Game 2 of Creamline's battle for bronze against Air Force in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Open Conference.

The towering Dell Palomata was a thorn on Creamline's side early, firing quick kills and putting up a wall at the net to stifle the Cool Smashers' attacks. Bundit gambled by sending Balse-Pabayo in the game, and though Creamline still lost the first set, it was clear that the veteran player could more than hold her own against Palomata.

"Sa akin kasi, 'yun ang naitulong ko sa team talaga," Balse-Pabayo said after the game. "Kailangan namin i-stop 'yun (si Palomata), kasi doon sila nakaka-score, 'di ba? Kailangan namin i-stop."
