Alex Mandreza is next man up for Letran

MANILA, Philippines – When Colegio de San Juan de Letran started its NCAA Season 93 campaign with a paltry 1-3 win-loss record, its young bench players received much of the blame.

After all, the Knights' "core four" of Rey Nambatac, JP Calvo, Bong Quinto, and Jerrick Balanza were all proven players who were part of Letran's championship team in Season 91. Nambatac, in particular, was a key contributor in that title run, while the other three players came into their own during Letran's title defense last season.

For the first four games of Season 93, Letran's reserves failed to match the production of their stars. The low point came in their game against San Beda College on July 25, when Letran's core four combined for 71 points in an 81-74 loss to the Red Lions.

Nambatac pointedly called out their team's bench players after that loss, saying that they need to step up in order help the veterans.

Almost a month and four straight wins later, it is fair to say that the Letran reserves have answered the call. First, the sturdy Jeremiah Taladua stepped up against Arellano University. Daryl Pascual then scored in double-digits against De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, and on Tuesday against San Sebastian College, it was Alex Mandreza's turn to shine.
