Three-headed monster' powering NLEX's hot start

MANILA, Philippines – Kevin Alas has gotten plenty of credit for NLEX's historic start in the 2017 PBA Governors' Cup, with the third-year guard even earning Player of the Week honors after helping the Road Warriors win their first two games.

When NLEX won its fourth consecutive contest on Sunday, however, Alas had a relatively quiet 13-point, four-rebound performance. Instead, it was Carlo Lastimosa and Alex Mallari who did the heavy lifting for the Road Warriors, especially in crunch time.

Lastimosa sparked the crucial 13-2 run that helped NLEX recover from a 10-point hole against the Phoenix Fuel Masters, and Mallari knocked down the dagger three-pointer that ensured their 95-91 victory.

"Me, Kevin, and Carlo – we're a three-headed monster," Mallari declared after the game. "We can all use the pick-and-roll, so I think they (Phoenix) were in trouble with that a little bit."

"We just tried to take advantage of the pick-and-roll," he added.

Mallari and Lastimosa each scored 14 points, with Lastimosa scoring 11 in the final quarter. Together, the three guards were able to make up for import Aaron Fuller's 18-point night.
