This time, La Salle's Maraño exits MOA Arena with a smile

MANILA, Philippines – There were no tears this time around for former De La Salle University captain Abigail Maraño, even as she exited the Mall of Asia Arena on the heels of another defeat to their archrivals, the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles.

Maraño's UAAP career ended at the MOA Arena, when they lost to Ateneo in the do-or-die Game 4 of the classic Season 76 Finals series that saw La Salle squander a thrice-to-beat advantage against Alyssa Valdez and the Lady Eagles.

On Sunday, Maraño and the Lady Spikers again fell short against the Lady Eagles, this time wasting a two-set advantage in the "Battle of the Rivals" to fall in five, 25-17, 25-21, 19-25, 21-25, 13-15.

"Nagpabaya kami," Maraño, who scored 16 points, admitted afterwards. "Kasi first two sets, kontrolado namin ang laban. Sa third and fourth, nawalan na kami ng first ball."

Maraño was in "Beast Mode" as usual for La Salle, scoring her trademark running hits and anchoring their net defense with three blocks. She gave the Lady Spikers their last lead in Set 5, 11-10, off a kill against Ateneo counterpart Amy Ahomiro.

Unfortunately for Maraño, she also committed the service error that allowed Ateneo to tie the frame, and watched from the reserve box as Ateneo pulled off the victory.
