Tanduay secures PBA D-League playoff spot

MANILA, Philippines – Tanduay is the third team to book a spot in the playoffs in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup after the Rhum Masters defeated Wangs Basketball, 93-81, on Tuesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Paul Varilla stepped up in crunch time for Tanduay, scoring five of his nine points in the final three minutes to fend off the Couriers' late rally, turning a close 82-77 lead with three minutes left to a commanding 12-point spread at the end of the game.

James Martinez paced Tanduay with 16 points off the bench, while Von Tambeling uncorked 15 markers, six rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

Jaymo Eguilos also chimed in 13 points and five boards, while Lester Alvarez had 11 markers, eight assists, and four rebounds in the win as the Rhum Masters solidified their stronghold of the third spot at 6-2.

Tanduay extended its winning streak to three games, and coach Lawrence Chongson is seeking to further stretch that as he gears towards the quarterfinals.

"We have to stay sharp. 'Yung focus dapat nandoon, lalo na sa transition defense and we’re really putting emphasis on the team’s collective focus," he said. "We have to sustain the momentum. I’ve been here long enough and we know how it works."
