Tanduay demolishes Zark's in record-breaking rout

MANILA, Philippines – Tanduay showed no mercy in pulverizing Zark's Burgers, 141-65, in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup on Monday at the Ynares Sports Arena, in the process rewriting the league's history books anew.

The Rhum Masters now have the record for most points scored in a game at 141, edging the 140-point output of Racal Motors against the same Zark's crew last June 8. Their 76-point margin of victory was also the most in D-League history, breaking Cignal HD's 67-point spread against Gamboa Coffee Mix last June 15.

For coach Lawrence Chongson, however, it was simply satisfying to see his team bounce back from a 104-89 defeat to Flying V in their previous game last Thursday.

"Nagkataon lang na nagkaroon kami ng strong start," said Chongson. "Galing kami sa talo, at ang iniisip lang namin, magkaroon ng momentum going on Thursday against Batangas."

Jerwin Gaco got the rout started as he dropped 14 of his 21 points in the first period, which saw the Rhum Masters race off to a 35-6 start. That set the tone for the rest of the game.

Gaco added eight rebounds and three assists to his stat line, while James Martinez, the D-League record-holder for most points scored, caught fire from downtown and made five of his eight triples for 23 points on top of nine assists and two rebounds.
