Svitolina earns first third-round berth over Schiavone

LONDON, Great Britain – Elina Svitolina is through to the third round of Wimbledon for the first time after charging past Francesca Schiavone in straight sets.

The No.4 seed took down the No.72-ranked former Grand Slam champion, 6-3, 6-0 in just 50 minutes to earn her career-best result at the All England Club.

Elina Svitolina is through to the third round of Wimbledon for the first time after charging past Francesca Schiavone in straight sets.
“I needed to work myself into the match because I didn't feel so well,” Svitolina admitted in her post-match press conference. The Ukrainian had her right ankle taped as she continues to struggle with an Achilles injury. “I was a bit struggling at the start. I was a bit slow and needed some time to be there, mentally as well.

“[But] I think everything was working well. It was quite good to see that I can, even when I'm not feeling good, show a good game and work myself into the match.”

Svitolina came out of the gates with her shots firing, packing powerful intensity behind her groundstrokes to combat Schiavone’s tricky mix of slices and spin.

The pair started out evenly matched for the opening exchanges, but the rhythm was broken as Schiavone took a slight tumble near the net chasing down a dropshot and jarring her knee.

Svitolina broke first with a confident flurry of winners, but Schiavone struck straight back after pouncing on a misfired volley.

Three double faults in a row handed it straight back as the Italian’s knee pain seemed to flare up again, and Svitolina took the reins from there. The Ukrainian snapped up the next eight games in a row to comfortably close out the match after 50 minutes of play.

She’ll take on Carina Witthoeft in the next round after the German battled past Belarusian qualifier Aryna Sabalenka in a close 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-3 victory.
