Rybarikova fights through to maiden Slam quarterfinal against Martic

LONDON, Great Britain - Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova worked hard to reach her first Wimbledon quarterfinal, beating Petra Martic 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

"The match was very intense today, and it was very difficult to play Petra," Rybarikova told reporters afterwards. "She played very good. I think at the end it was a good match. So I'm happy that I went through."

Magdalena Rybarikova beat Petra Martic at Wimbledon to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
The Croat made the early running, breaking in the very first game of the match, then holding serve to take an early advantage.

But Rybarikova put the Martic serve under pressure, using her slice to excellent effect, and won four straight games to take the opening set 6-4, wrapping it up with a ripped forehand down the line.

The second set started in exactly the same fashion as the first, with Martic breaking then holding in the opening two games.

Rybarikova looked less confident as her opponent darted to the net more, and Martic broke to love with a deft drop shot to take a 5-2 lead before holding to love to force a decider.

Rybarikova was resurgent in the third, though, dismantling the Martic service game with aplomb and fighting through to her first Slam quarterfinal.

She continues a fine run of form on the Wimbledon lawns as she works to rise up the rankings following an absence through injury; vanquished opponents this year so far include third seed Karolina Pliskova.
