Pocari Sweat wards off charging UP side

MANILA, Philippines - Pocari Sweat turned back an upset-conscious University of the Phl, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21, yesterday to jumpstart its campaign for a fourth title in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the Filoil Arena in Pasig.

Myla Pablo, the 2017 Reinforced Conference Finals MVP, went on attack mode as she uncorked a team-best 18 hits including 16 on kills as the Lady Warriors nailed their first victory that set in motion their  campaign for a fourth crown counting the three they have already won – 2017 Reinforced and 2016 Open and Reinforced Conferences.

The win sent Pocari to an early share of the top spot with Creamline and Air Force, which won their opening day assignments over Adamson-Akari and Perlas-Banko, respectively, the day before.

It was also a welcome gift for new coach Rico de Guzman, who took over from Rommel Abella last month.

“We had a slow start but the players didn’t panic and adjusted well,” said De Guzman, who won championships during his stint in the then Shakey’s V-League as the Army Lady Troopers coach a few years back.

The Lady Maroons, playing minus their leaders and now Perlas-Banko standouts Kat Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon, came out strong and surprised the heavily favored Lady Warriors by snatching the opening set.
