POC not giving up on hosting SEAG

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) is not yet giving up on the initial plans of the country’s hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games despite the government’s decision to withdraw from staging the biennial meet.

POC Secretary General Steve Hontiveros said they have already scheduled a board meeting and general assembly with the National Sports Associations on July 26 to get feedback of the recent development.

“This is a democratic country. Hindi naman natin pwedeng basta-bastang i-withdraw lang yung hosting without asking for feedback from the Board Members and most especially, the leaders from the National Sports Associations,” said Hontiveros.

Malacañang informed the POC in a formal letter dated July 19 and signed by Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez that it would no longer push through with the SEAG hosting, saying that the resources intended for the biennial meet will be diverted to the rehabilitation of war-torn Marawi City.

The country’s withdrawal is also “due to the current situation in Mindanao and the problem of terrorism and atrocities,” which concerns the safety of the all the participating athletes.

Hontiveros said the SEAG Federation has reached out to the POC following the news breakout, but hasn’t given them the final decision regarding the issue.
