Philippines makes short work of Turkmenistan to advance

The Philippines advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIBA 3x3 Under-18 World Cup by beating Turkmenistan 21-14 in Chengdu, China on Friday.

Encho Serrano, a daredevil guard who loves to attack the rim, produced a fitting ending to the game, scoring on a strong, acrobatic drive off a dish by Rhayyan Amsali that finished off Turkmenistan with 1:32 left on the clock.

The Philippines, seeded 7th in the tournament, ended the group stage with a 3-1 record, good for second in Pool A behind the Netherlands and safe passage through the next round.

Kiefer Ravena and Kobe Paras, members of the Philippines' senior men's team that played in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup in Nantes, France, congratulated their Batang Gilas counterparts.

After starring in the Filipinos' easy win over Poland less than 2 hours prior, Serrano wasn't done wowing the crowd and frustrating the competition.

His quick first step ended in blow-by layups or, when he was met by a heftier defender, a tough finish despite drawing contact.
