Perpetual Help boss rues NCAA's 'mistake' over forfeited game

MANILA, Philippines – University of Perpetual Help chief executive and president Antonio Tamayo on Monday said the NCAA committed a mistake when it allowed the Altas' game against De La Salle-College of St. Benilde to push through last week, despite knowing that the Altas had worn the wrong uniform color.

"They were wrong to allow our team to play, and penalized us twice by slapping us a technical foul and giving the other team a free throw before the game started, and then forfeit it later," Tamayo said.

Tamayo believes that the NCAA should have allowed league commissioner Arturo "Bai" Cristobal to make the decision.

"The league should empower Commissioner Bai Cristobal, and let him decide anything related to basketball matters," he said. "I believe they should not forfeit the game under the process undertaken by the commissioner."

Perpetual Help won the game last Tuesday, 69-65, only to forfeit it the later that night. The school lodged a protest the next day, seeking to overturn the NCAA's decision.

As of press time, the Management Committee chaired by Fr. Glyn Ortega, OAR of host San Sebastian College was holding an emergency meeting to try and come up with a final resolution regarding the issue.
