Perlas bows to Japan to open FIBA Women's Asia Cup

Japan gave the Philippines a rude welcome into Division A of the FIBA Women's Asia Cup, dealing Perlas Pilipinas a huge 106-55 rout on Sunday in Bangalore, India.

The Japanese surged to a 25-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and never let up, leading by as much as 59 points in the contest.

Against Japan, one of the favorites to win the title, Perlas Pilipinas shot only 29.41% from the field, while allowing their foes to connect on 48.78% of their shots. The Japanese were particularly lethal from close range, converting 55.56% of their attempts.

Gemma Miranda led the Filipinas with 17 points, while Allana Lim added nine markers.

The Filipinas won't get much of a break as they will face off against another title contender, Australia, on Monday.

The top four teams in the tournament will advance to the FIBA Women's World Cup in Spain.
