Loreto guns for WBA crown

Rey Loreto, a poor boy from Davao City, attempts to become a world champion this afternoon in Chonburi, Thailand.

A victory over Thammanoon Niyomtrong, the current World Boxing Association strawweight (105 lbs)  king, should also make him the country’s fourth world champion following the recent loss of Manny Pacquiao.

Loreto enters the fight with a 23-13 win-loss record with 15 KOs while the Thai titleholder parades a 15-0 card with seven stoppages.

If victorious, Loreto will join ALA Boxing stablemates Donnie Nietes and Milan Melindo and Jerwin Ancajas.

Aside from the voices of chief handler Brico Santig and trainer Joven Jorda, Loreto can also expect cheering from a three-man team from the Games and Amusements Board, led by chairman Baham Mitra.

Mitra is in Thailand to meet with Thai boxing officials and root for Loreto.
