Gilas closes out Jones Cup with win over Iran

The Philippine national men's basketball team failed to defend their title in the William Jones Cup, but still ended the tournament on a high note after a 90-82 victory over Iran on Sunday night in Taiwan.

With the hard-fought victory over a young Iran team, the Philippines finished the tournament with a 6-3 win-loss record, good for fourth place behind Canada, Lithuania, and South Korea – also the only three teams to have beaten Gilas Pilipinas.

Import Mike Myers led the national team with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting on top of 11 rebounds, while Matthew Wright had 20 points built on three three-pointers. Christian Standhardinger came off the bench for 13 points.

It was not a comfortable victory for Gilas Pilipinas, however, as they struggled to contain the taller Iranians, especially when in the half-court. Iran held a slim 22-21 advantage with 41 seconds left in the opening frame off two charities by Rasoul Mozafarivanani, after the Philippines had spent most of the first quarter ahead.

A lay-up by Standhardinger and a triple by Roger Pogoy restored order and put Gilas ahead, 26-22, after the first frame, but they would spend the rest of the game fending off repeatedly comeback attempts by the Iranians.

A three-point play by Ebrahim Beigiharchegani made it a one-possession game, 40-43, with two minutes left in the first half, but Gilas ended the second quarter on a 7-2 run to seize a 50-42 lead at halftime.
