Compton looks forward to Govs Cup

No PBA coach has suffered more heartbreak in recent years than Alaska’s Alex Compton, who will enter the Governors’ Cup not only with something to prove but also a chance at rebounding from his worst campaign since taking over the Aces in 2014.

The Commissioner’s Cup was a nightmare for Compton and the Aces. They started the tournament with four consecutive victories to gain early consideration for the title, only to suffer eight straight defeats to miss out on playoff berth for the first time in his tenure.

It was the latest debacle Alaska suffered under Compton, who was also the coach during the Aces’ infamous loss to the San Miguel Beermen in the 2016 Philippine Cup finals where it blew a commanding 3-0 lead.

The former MBA star is embracing the chance at bringing the Aces back to their winning ways, and hopefully get that celebratory ride given to champion coaches.

“This is completely strange territory for me,” Compton reflected following Alaska’s 120-117 loss to Gilas Pilipinas Saturday afternoon at the Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong City.

“We lost eight straight (last conference), that’s unacceptable. You’re always judged by your last performance and that’s fair, that’s part of the job, and so do we need to get out and win some games and play well? Yes. Were we absolutely horrible last conference? In terms of wins and losses, yes, but they weren’t 35-point a game margins,” he added.
