Chot sets stage for Paras, Sotto

Taipei – Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes isn’t only looking at the national team’s participation in international competitions this year and in the next two, including the home-and-away tournaments of FIBA.

He is looking far beyond, as far as the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

Kobe Paras.
As the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) prepares to make another run at hosting the World Cup in 2023 – this time with the help of Japan and Indonesia – Reyes wants to prepare for that by integrating young players to the national team training pool.

First to get in to the Gilas system is college player Kobe Paras, and according to Reyes, high school standout Kai Sotto is not far behind – two players that will likely form the core of future national teams.

Paras has played in various international meets with the youth team, but this is the first time that the 6-foot-6 son of former PBA two-time MVP Benjie Paras is playing with Gilas here in the William Jones Cup.

“We want to develop him, take him along slowly, give him a taste of playing in an elite international tournament like this,” said Reyes.
