Boxers eye 6 SEAG medals

MANILA, Philippines - From 11 in 2015 in Singapore, the gold medals that will be disputed in boxing in next month’s Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur are down to six.

“We have no choice but to field six boxers,” said Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP) executive director Ed Picson.

Organizers of the Kuala Lumpur Games have totally scrapped the female side of boxing, leaving only six weight classes in the men’s category (49, 52, 56, 64, 75 and 81 kg).

“Since Malaysia doesn’t have female boxers, they did not include women’s boxing. It’s a pity because it’s also a good source of medals for us,” said Picson.

Still, the Philippines is looking forward to the boxing competitions.

“At the risk of sounding immodest, since we have six boxers, we think and we believe that they are all capable of winning,” said the ABAP official.
