Boomers start to get ready for Beirut

GOLD COAST (FIBA Asia Cup 2017) - Australia coach Andrej Lemanis and his new look national team are launching their preparations this week in Gold Coast for a first-ever participation in a FIBA Asia Cup.

Twenty players will be at the training camp, which is being held at the Carrara Sports Precinct.

Australia announced their squad just over a month ago and had Ben Madgen in it but he is now out and has been replaced by Matt Johns, a Centre of Excellence scholarship holder.

Players that have represented Australia before at Olympic Games for FIBA Basketball World Cups that are in the 20-team selection are David Andersen, Chris Goulding, Daniel Kickert, Kevin Lisch and Brad Newley.

Andersen, Goulding and Lisch were in last year's Boomers side that almost won the Bronze Medal.

Johns is a promising 18-year-old who has worn the national team shirt at youth level. A power forward, he averaged 5.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

At the FIBA Asia Cup, Australia will play in Group D against Japan, Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei.

The competition tips off on in Beirut, Lebanon, on August 8.
