Blu Girls take down Canada anew in softball tilt

The Philippine Blu Girls scored another upset against world No. 3 Canada, 6-3, ending the campaign of the host country in the Canada Cup International Softball Championship in Surrey, British Columbia.

The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Filipinas quickly established a 5-0 lead, courtesy of Kailee Cuico's three-run homer at the top of the first, and Hailey Decker's 2 RBIs at the top of the second.

The Philippines then went up 6-0 in the fifth, thanks to Cuico's single that sent Chelsea Kaithlyn Suitos home, before giving Canada a break in the last two innings.

"This is the second time that the Blu Girls have beaten powerhouse Canada in this tournament, which proves that our country is getting stronger in the sport," said Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines president Jean Henri Lhuillier.

"The team has been taking each game to heart," he added. "If they keep up this pace, there is no doubt that the Philippines could contend for a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics."

The 17th ranked Pinay softbelles will face Puerto Rico on Sunday in a bid to extend its campaign in the tournament.
